The move to big screen meant that for Star Trek: The Motion Picture they would need a larger model with finer details. The result of the redesign process is a much more steamlined and dynamic design known as "The Refit".
The primary difficulty in this model are the complex composite shapes that make up the warp nacelles. It took quite a bit of fidgiting to get a shape I was happy with. The other big difficulty is replicating what is known as the 'aztec pattern' of overlapping armor plates with slightly different diffuse and specular characteristics. As this was done with an earlier rendering pipeline there is no gloss map, just specular strength, something I hope to one day go back and add.
Modeled in Maya, maps from Turtle, and rendered in Marmoset v1.
